Jet Edge Awarded U.S. Patent

Michael Wheeler with Patent

Jet Edge, Inc. has announced  that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued the waterjet manufacturer a patent for a high pressure fluid sealing mechanism designed by Jet Edge R&D Engineer Michael Wheeler. Jet Edge’s proprietary high pressure fluid sealing mechanism (U.S. Patent 8,333,387) improves waterjet seal life by providing robust Metal-on-Metal sealing without the use of conventional plastic seals. This technology uses two convex curved surfaces in single line contact with one another to seal ultra-high pressure (UHP) fluid at static pressures up to 130,000 psi.

Thustmaster Expands Its Waterjets Team

Marine propulsion and thrusters manufacturer Thrustmaster of Texas announced that Leonard Hill and Jason Hill have joined its waterjet team, bringing with them more than 65 years of experience in waterjet design, manufacturing and sales. Rolls-Royce, is to develop a new, highly efficient water jet to propel unmanned surface craft for the US Navy. The new water jet will be the smallest Rolls-Royce design to date, with a diameter of just 100 millimetres, and will quietly propel the craft through the water on remotely controlled missions that include intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance. Rolls-Royce will develop the water jet part of the innovative small propulsion system, part of a US Government funded Small Business Innovative Research (SBIR) project led by Candent Technologies Inc.

EU Proposes New Safety Standard

The EU is working toward creating a general standard for protective suits in the high-pressure water jet industry. On December 12, 2002, experts representing manufacturers and test houses from France, Germany, Sweden, and Belgium, as well an observer from the United States met in Brussels, Belgium. The host of the meeting was the Notified Body Centexbel, coordinated by Fred Foubert. The group worked towards developing a standard method of testing that could be used throughout Europe to evaluate Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) used by operators in the water jet industry. There is currently no uniform standard of protection levels for the water jet industry. Three tiers of protection were discussed using energy criteria.

New Lifeboat Unveiled

A new jet-powered lifeboat has been unveiled by a Dorset-based sea rescue charity. The Fast Carriage Boat 2 (FCB2) is propelled by twin water jet engines making it faster than its predecessor and easier to manuever. It will be the first of Poole-based RNLI's all-weather lifeboats to use water-jets instead of propellers. The boat can land directly onto a beach by hitting it at speed, forcing the boat out of the breaking waves. The 45ft. FCB2 can reach speeds of up to 25 knots. Because the boat is powered by water jets, there is no propeller to be damaged if the boat hits the ground in shallow water rescues or as it lands and launches. Source: BBC

Semi-Automated VertaJet for Surface Prep

The VertaJet SRT-6LT from NLB Corp. does surface preparation faster than manual water jetting and is even more ergonomic than previous models. The new handheld unit needs no air connection to rotate the 40,000 psi (2,800 bar) water jets, and it weighs just 20 lbs. The VertaJet SRT-6LT quickly removes paint, epoxies and other coatings from steel structures and other surfaces. With multiple water jets rotating at 3,000 rpm to create a six-inch (15cm) cleaning path, productivity is very high.
