Beginning December 2016, Kristina Effler will assist marine customers navigating ballast water treatment alternatives as the new Global Business Manager for Alfa Laval PureBallast. Effler assumes the role just as the global shipping industry prepares for the implementation of the IMO BWM Convention’s entry into force in September 2017. Effler brings 12 years of experience in various positions throughout the Alfa Laval organization.
Damen Tug Commissioned by Port Nelson

Youngest Containership Sold for Scrap
Today in the containership industry a landmark deal has occurred with the youngest ever containership sent for demolition by Rickmers Marine Trust. The vessel was a seven year old panamax boxship (4250 TEU, 2009 Blt, Built China). She is valued just above scrap at USD 5.87m. In 2016 the vessel fell 62% in value. This year the average change in value in the containership sector is -26% to put this figure in perspective.
US Warship LCS 10 Completes Acceptance Trials
The fifth Independence-variant littoral combat ship built by Austal, Gabrielle Giffords (LCS 10), successfully completed acceptance trials, Nov. 18, in the Gulf of Mexico. “I am proud of Austal’s achievement of another major milestone in the LCS program.” said Craig Perciavalle, President of Austal USA. “The steady increase in momentum on this program, with seven LCS currently under construction, has sharpened our focus on leveraging lessons learned from one ship to the next.
Boskalis Bags Brazil's Terminal Expansion Deal
Royal Boskalis Westminster N.V. (Boskalis) has been awarded a contract by Açu Petróleo S.A. (joint venture company of Prumo Logística S.A. and Oiltanking Gmbh) for the expansion of the Porto do Açu Oil Transhipment Terminal in Rio de Janeiro State, Brazil. The contract has a total value of approximately EUR 120 million. The expansion comprises the deepening, widening and extension of the access channel and turning basin.
Traffic Increase between Gothenburg and Belgium
Belgium is Sweden’s eighth largest export market. The Swedish shipping company SOL is about to expand its departure frequency between the Port of Gothenburg and the Belgian port of Zeebrugge. The change will offer greater scope for Swedish import and export companies to ship freight to and from Belgium.
