UK to Create Shipping Jobs through New SMarT+
The UK shipping industry will create thousands of jobs for young people if Government increases funding for seafarer training, the UK Chamber of Shipping has said. The industry trains around 800 new cadets each year, but this could increase to 1200 under a new industry proposal that would see shipowners commit to employing cadets after their training is completed. Major employers including Shell and Carnival have already committed to the scheme.

Vietnam to Tap Waterways Transport Potential
The total length of waterways that can be exploited is 17,000 kilometers, of which 9,000 kilometers are capable of receiving vessels with tonnage of over 100 tons, VietNamNet Bridge reported. Vietnam still cannot take advantage of its 3,200 kilometers of coastline, 6,500 kilometers of rivers, 126 river ports, 2,300 passenger ports and 4,800 berths. The Ministry of Transport estimates that Vietnam needs $600 million to upgrade the waterway transport network by 2020.
Port Everglades to Deepen, Widen Channels
The Port Everglades Navigation Improvements Project has received federal authorization for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to move forward with deepening and widening the Port's navigation channels as part of the Water Infrastructure Improvements for the Nation (WIIN) Act signed into law December 16, 2016, by President Barack Obama. The project is currently in the preconstruction engineering and design phase, and can now proceed through the permitting and federal funding processes.
Woman Medevaced from Cruise Ship
The Coast Guard medevaced a 36-year-old woman from the cruise ship Norwegian Dawn 110 miles south of Southwest Pass, Louisiana, Thursday. Coast Guard Sector New Orleans watchstanders received a report at 3:20 p.m. that a cruise ship crewmember, Shirlee Magsino, had been suffering from abdominal pain. Watchstanders launched a Coast Guard Air Station New Orleans MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew and a Coast Guard Aviation Training Center HC-144 Ocean Sentry aircrew at 4:41 p.m.
