McDonough Launches New Ocean-going Barge
McDonough Marine Service announced the launching of another new barge MARMAC 304 (300’ x 100’ x 20’), the third in a series of new ABS ocean classed deck barges commissioned by the barge and tug company. The barge was built for McDonough Marine Service by Signal International in Orange, Texas. The MARMAC 304 barge was designed with an ABS Load line maximum cargo capacity of 13,200 short tons and uniform deck strength of 4,500 lbs/sq. ft.
Ports of Indiana Names New Public Affairs Manager
Heather Bunning has joined the Ports of Indiana as the new Public Affairs Manager, and will serve as the primary contact for media inquiries related to all three of the state's public ports as well as statewide maritime, foreign-trade zone and multimodal transportation issues. The Ports of Indiana is a statewide port authority that operates a system of three ports on the Ohio River and Lake Michigan, located in Jeffersonville, Mount Vernon and Burns Harbor/Portage.
ZIM Introduces CGX Service in New Orleans
ZIM Integrated Shipping Ltd. formally introduced a new weekly container shipping service to the Port of New Orleans' Napoleon Avenue Container Terminal. The Caribbean Gulf Express, or CGX service, offers weekly service to Caucedo, Dominican Republic; Altamira and Vera Cruz, Mexico; and Kingston, Jamaica. The CGX service serves all major trade routes, including Asia through its hub in Kingston, Jamaica. Haifa, Israel-based ZIM employs five container ships in the CGX service.

Two Safety Updates from USCG
The Coast Guard issued a safety alert to personnel and the maritime community warning of the potential dangers of confined space entries. In the first case, an inspector was on board a tank vessel to conduct a Port State Control Examination. In anticipation of the examination, the crew opened the hatch to the Freefall Lifeboat to let it air out. As the Inspector entered the lifeboat his gas meter alarmed and he quickly exited.
UASC Orders 10 Boxships from Hyundai Heavy
Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) announced that it won a $1.4 billion order to build five 18,000 TEU class and five 14,000 TEU class containerships from the United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) on August 29. McCullough Takes Helm of Surface Navy Association
Retired Vice Adm. Barry McCullough has been named to succeed retired Vice Adm. Ron Route as president of the Surface Navy Association. Route will become the president of the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, Calif., in early October. McCullough retired from the U.S. Navy in 2011 where he was Commander, U.S. Fleet Cyber Command/Commander, U.S. 10th Fleet. He also served as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations for Integration of Capabilities (OPNAV N8) and Director of Surface Warfare (OPNAV N86).

Australian Navy Recruit School Graduates First Shipp Division
For the first time in the history of the Royal Australian Navy’s Recruit School, a recruit division named after a sailor, rather than an officer, graduated today. Eighty recruits were welcomed into the Navy from Shipp Division, named after the late Leading Seaman Noel Ervin Shipp, during a Graduation Parade for General Entry class 314 that was held at HMAS Cerberus. Shipp joined the Royal Australian Navy on January 10, 1963, as an underwater control rating.

Liberia Storms Ahead on MLC Certification
Ninety-four percent of qualifying Liberian-flag ships have achieved successful Maritime Labour Convention 2006 compliance, just one week after the convention entered force, putting Liberia far ahead of any other international ship registry. MLC 2006 certification is a multi-step process. The first step involves the issuing of a Declaration of Maritime Labour Compliance (DMLC) Part 1 at the request of the owner. This is followed by the owner’s submission of DMLC Part 2 for approval.

Korean Shipbuilders Wins UASC Container Ship Orders
United Arab Shipping Company (UASC) has placed orders worth over $2 billion for very large container ships with South Korea's Hyundai Heavy Industries., reports Trade Arabia. UASC has ordered five vessels of 18,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEU) each, and five 14,000 TEU vessels. The ships are to be delivered starting in late 2014. In addition, UASC has signed options to buy one additional 18,000 TEU vessel and six 14,000 TEU ships.
