Acceptance Trials for Makin Island
Northrop Grumman shipbuilders and U.S. Navy personnel joined forces aboard the amphibious assault ship Makin Island (LHD 8) to complete a successful U.S. Navy acceptance sea trial in the Gulf of Mexico. The ship is the eighth USS Wasp (LHD 1)-class amphibious assault ship being built by the company at its Gulf Coast facilities in Pascagoula, Miss. During the acceptance trial, Makin Island performed all required sea trial evolutions for the U.S. Navy's Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV).

U.S. Navy Vessels Collide in Strait of Hormuz
A U.S. Navy submarine and U.S. amphibious ship collided in the Strait of Hormuz March 20, 2009. The collision between USS Hartford (SSN 768) and USS New Orleans (LPD 18) occurred at approximately 1:00 a.m. local time (5:00 p.m. EDT, March 19). Fifteen sailors aboard the Hartford were slightly injured and returned to duty. No personnel aboard New Orleans were injured. Overall damage to both ships is being evaluated. The propulsion plant of the submarine was unaffected by this collision.

Built to a design by Oceanic Yacht Design, also of Queensland, the boat has a 28-knot top speed and the dramatic looks to go with it. The vessels semi-swath hull design combined with good clearance of the bridge between the hulls, allows the high speeds to be maintained in heavy sea conditions.
