FEPORT, ETA, EMPA and ECASBA Raise Cargo Diversion Concerns

As risks of cargo diversion to the detriment of EU ports are becoming more and more real with the upcoming entry into force at the beginning of 2024 of EU ETS for shipping, local organizations are voicing their concerns.The Federation of European Port Companies and Private Terminals (FEPORT), European Tugownersā€™ Association (ETA), European Maritime Pilotsā€™ Association (EMPA) and European Community Association of Ship Brokers and Agents (ECASBA) members are expressing major concerns regarding the lack of real assessment of the EU ETS for shipping related effects on EU ports.

Grounding Averted: Disabled Box Ship Steered to Safety in the UK

A grounding incident was avoided thanks to swift action by a team of harbor tugs and pilots aboard a Panamanian registered containership that lost power in Southampton, U.K., according to a local pilots group.At around 11 a.m. on January 26, the 20,000 TEU containership MOL Treasure departed the Port of Southampton bound for Le Harve, amid good, though gusty, weather conditions, with clear visibility and calm seas. UK Ship Pilot Dies in Transfer Accident

A U.K. ship pilot has died as result of an accident during a transfer from a pilot launch to a large oceangoing vessel on the east coast of Northern England.The accident occurred on January 8, 2023 in the Humber Estuary, the UK Maritime Pilotsā€™ Association (UK MPA) said in a statement. The U.K.'s Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has opened a full investigation into the cause of the incident.Killed in the incident was Capt. New Zealand Seeks Industry Input on Possible Regulatory Changes

New Zealand's maritime regulatory, compliance and response agency said it is seeking feedback from the sector and other interested parties on three key pieces of work.Dialogue has been opened on Part 53, which relates to pilot transfers, and Part 23, which considers amendments to requirements for lifeboat drills, Maritime NZ said. Consultation is also set to begin on New Zealandā€™s work toward acceding to the Cape Town Agreement (CTA), an IMO convention dealing with design, construction and equipment standards for large fishing vessels.Maritime NZ is reviewing Rule 53.4(2)(a)ā€¦

Russia Won't Restrict Other Countries Using Northern Sea Route

IMO Honors 'Exceptional Maritime People'

Maritime Pilots Recognized with IMO Bravery Accolade

Two maritime pilots who defied fire to bring a burning ship to safety, averting a major maritime catastrophe, received the 2017 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea during the 2017 IMO awards ceremony, held on Monday (27 November). Pilots Captain Michael G. McGee and Captain Michael C. Phillips, from Houston, United States, were recognized for their role in averting a major tragedy in September 2016. The ship they were piloting, the 247 meters-long tanker Aframax River, broke down in the Houston Ship Channel in the middle of the night and burst into flames after colliding with mooring dolphins. Captain McGee and Captain Phillips were surrounded by a towering wall of burning fuel as the raging fire quickly spread across the channelā€¦

Warren will work in partnership with the OBMP board members, state-licensed maritime pilots, shipping industry representatives and contractors, as well as with environmental, state and federal regulatory agencies and Oregon residents in an effort to implement the objectives and goals of OBMP. Warren previously served as a regulatory specialist for the Oregon Liquor Control Commission and possesses 25 years of maritime leadership experience with the U.S.

2017 IMO Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea

Two members of the Houston Pilots in the United States are to receive the 2017 International Maritime Organization (IMO)  Award for Exceptional Bravery at Sea. The pair will be recognized for their role in averting a major tragedy when the ship they were piloting broke down and burst into flames after colliding with mooring dolphins. Despite being surrounded by a towering wall of burning fuel for nearly 90 minutes, pilots Captain Michael G. McGee and Captain Michael C. Phillips showed decisiveness, dedication and ship-handling expertise. As a result of their courageous actions, no lives were lost, serious damage to pier structures and petro-chemical facilities were prevented and a major marine pollution incident was avoided.
