The UK P&I Club says it has received reports of a number of accidents and injuries to crew members resulting from the inadvertent release of highly toxic phosphine gas or the effects of fires and explosions, both caused by the unsafe disposal of residues of aluminium phosphide following the fumigation of cargoes in transit. International guidance and recommendations on fumigation on board ships is contained in MSC Circulars 12641 and 13962 and the IMSBC Code3.

Lerwick Harbour recorded strong performances across various key sectors in the first quarter of this year, compared with the same period in 2013. However, seasonal factors impacted negatively on passenger traffic in particular. • Cargo across the near-4,000 metres of quays increased 19% to 282,060 tonnes. • It included 43,388 tonnes of oil-related shipments, up 60% due to movement of heavy items, such as offshore anchor chains, and increased supplies.
BP Cleaning Up Oil Spill On Alaska's North Slope
Work crews for BP Plc were clearing contaminated snow on Thursday on Alaska's North Slope after a Prudhoe Bay well line ruptured, spraying a 34-acre area with crude oil and natural gas. Just how much liquid escaped from the line remains under investigation by BP and Alaska's Department of Environmental Conservation. It remains unclear whether the leak, detected earlier this week, is connected to a decline in North Slope oil production. BP did not return emails seeking comment.
Gulf Keystone Denies Report On CEO's Ouster
Oil explorer Gulf Keystone on Thursday denied a media report that its board and investors planned to call for the resignation of founder and Chief Executive Todd Kozel within months. British broadcaster Sky News reported that several Gulf Keystone directors had held talks this week about Kozel's departure, prompted by a series of rows over executive pay and shareholder returns. Gulf Keystone spokesman Terence Franklin denied the report and told Reuters there was no substance to these "rumours".
First Tanker To Dock At Libya's Zueitina Port
Libya's eastern Zueitina oil port will receive late on Thursday its first tanker of crude since reopening after nearly ten months due to protests, state-run National Oil Corp (NOC) said. The tanker would load one million barrels of crude, NOC spokesman Mohammed El Harari said. According to shipping sources, Austria's OMV had chartered the Ottoman Tenacity. A second tanker would load crude on May 5 and a third one after that, Harari said.

Tug Fairmount Expedition has towed jack-up rig Naga 3 safely from Labuan, Malaysia, to the PV Marine Shipyard in Vung Tau, Vietnam. The Fairmount Expedition was mobilized from Singapore for this 575 miles voyage. During the voyage the Fairmount Expedition only made use of two of her four main engines. The Naga 3 is a Gusto MSC CJ46-X100-D design jack-up rig, built in 2010 by Dubai Drydocks World and owned by UMW Petropipe/Singapore Drilling.
