ConRo Ablaze in the Bay of Biscay

Twenty-seven people have been rescued from an Italian-registered cargo ship that caught fire Monday night in the Bay of Biscay, about 150 miles southwest of Brest. The Grimaldi Group owned combination container roll-on/roll-off (ConRo) vessel Grande America was sailing from Hamburg to Casablanca when its cargo of containers and vehicles caught fire around 8 p.m.After attempts to battle the flames proved unsuccessful, the entire crew of 26 and one passenger disembarked into heavy seas aboard a single enclosed lifeboat and were rescued by the crew of British Royal Navy frigate HMS Argyll…

Ballard Joins H2Ports Project

Grimaldi: 18 Engines Ordered for 9 Ships

MAN Energy Solutions has won the order to supply 18 × MAN B&W 9S50ME-C9.6 TIER II-compliant main engines for 9 × 7,800 lane-meter RoRo vessels intended for operation in the Mediterranean Sea. The customer is the Grimaldi Group, the Naples, Italy-based shipping company and leading operator within the RoRo segment. MAN Energy Solutions’ two-stroke licensee – Hyundai Heavy Industries Co., Ltd. (Engine & Machinery Business Unit) – will build the engines in Korea, while Jiangsu Jinling Shipyard Co. Ltd. will construct the vessels in Nanjing, China. Delivery of the first vessels is expected from 2020. Rolls-Royce Wins Propulsion Contract for Nine RoRo Vessels

Rolls-Royce Commercial Marine has won a significant contract to deliver the propulsion system to nine vessels to be built by Nanjing Jinling Shipyard Co in China for the Italian Grimaldi Group.The nine 238 meter long vessels are so called Ro-Ro vessels (Roll-on-Roll-off) designed to transport over 7,800 linear meters of rolling units, equivalent to about 500 trailers. They are named the Grimaldi Green 5th Generation, and will be hybrid powered by combining use of traditional fossil fuels during operation and battery power when in port. The vessels are being designed by Knud E.

Kongsberg to Power Grimaldi’s Nine New RoRos

Kongsberg Maritime said it has been awarded contracts with Chinese shipbuilder Nanjing Jinling Shipyard Co. to deliver power and hybrid systems to nine Roll on – Roll off (Ro-Ro) vessels ordered by Grimaldi Group, Italy. The contracts are valued at more than NOK 400 million ($47 million) and include an option for three additional vessels increasing the total value to more than NOK 500 Million ($59 million).Due for delivery from 2020, the new vessels will be 238 meters long, with a beam of 34 meters and gross tonnage of 64,000 tons.

Grimaldi Group: Alfa Laval PureSOx for Five ACL Vessels

The Grimaldi Group signed an agreement for PureSOx connectivity services on five vessels operated by Atlantic Container Line (ACL). The services will provide not only compliance monitoring, but also valuable data for use in optimizing PureSOx operation. The Grimaldi Group has been using PureSOx for exhaust gas cleaning aboard its vessels since 2014. ACL, a Grimaldi Group company specialized in transatlantic cargo shipping, has hybrid PureSOx scrubber systems installed on all five of its Generation 4 (G4) vessels: Atlantic Sail, Atlantic Sea, Atlantic Sky, Atlantic Star and Atlantic Sun.

New Generation of RoRo Vessels Unveiled

Naval architect KNUD E. HANSEN reports it has signed a contract with Chinese shipbuilder Nanjing Jinling Shipyard to develop the basic design of a number of large RoRo vessels, based on a Grimaldi/KNUD E. HANSEN concept.The new vessels, the first of which is expected to be delivered in 2020, will have a length of 238 meters, a beam of 34 meters and a gross tonnage of 64,000 metric tons. Each will be able to transport more than 7,800 lane meters of rolling units, equivalent to approximately 500 trailers.KNUD E.

Finnlines Orders Three Ro-ro Vessels

Finnlines, part of the Grimaldi Group, signed a 200 million euro ($240 million) order for three new ro-ro vessels to be delivered from China’s Jinling Shipyard from 2020-2021.The 17,400 DWT vessels will be 238 meters long and have a cargo capacity of 5,800 lane meters plus 5,600m2 of car decks and a capacity of about 300 TEU on the weather deck. Grimaldi Group Orders New RoRo Vessels

Grimaldi Christens Grande New York

The Grande New York, part of the new fleet of the Grimaldi Group, was christened in the Port of NY-NJ at Port Newark Auto Marine Terminal (FAPS). Godmother was Amanda Matilda Cuomo Cole, granddaughter of former late NY Governor, Mario Cuomo and niece of current NY Governor Andrew Cuomo. Father Peter Haldás of St. John Paul II blessed the ship during a short ceremony to a distinguished delegation composed of maritime authorities, customers, port operators and managers of Grimaldi Group and daughter company Atlantic Container Line.

Fincantieri, Grimaldi Sign Cruise Revamp Deal

The construction of the two mid-body sections will begin in 2018, while the completion of the works at Palermo shipyard is foreseen within summer 2019. The two vessels, currently in service on the daily route Civitavecchia- Porto Torres-Barcelona with the “Grimaldi Lines” livery, have been built by Fincantieri shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia and delivered to the Neapolitan group in 2007 and 2008 respectively. They are 225 meters long, having a gross tonnage of 54,000 tons and capacity of transporting about 3,000 passengers, a 2,400 square meters car deck and approx.

Finnlines Continues to Add Capacity

Finnlines said it is continuing capacity expansion efforts in response to growing volumes. The Baltic Sea ro-ro and passenger vessels operator has purchased MS Europalink as reports further progress in its vessel lengthening program. Finnlines Plc’s fully owned Swedish subsidiary, Rederi Aktiebolaget Nordö-Link, has purchased a Star class passenger-freight vessel, MS Europalink, from the Grimaldi Group in accordance with an earlier signed purchase agreement. Finnlines Sells Ro-pax Vessel to Grimaldi Group

Finnlines Plc said it has sold a 1999-built ro-pax vessel MS Finneagle to the Grimaldi Group.   The 18-year-old MS Finneagle was chartered out to the Grimaldi Group from June 2017, and it will be delivered to the Grimaldi Group in October 2017.   The freight capacity of the vessel is 2,459 lane meters, and passenger capacity is 835 passengers.   Finnlines said the sale is part of its “strategy to optimize the use of [its] vessels and routes in order to improve its profitability.”   “The sale does not affect the provision of our cargo and passenger service level offered to the customers,” Finnlines said.

The UK Chamber of Shipping's CEO Guy Platten and its president Dr Grahaeme Henderson were among a delegation of international shipowners and major figures from the shipping industry that visited 10 Downing Street on Monday as part of London International Shipping Week 2017. The delegation, led by Maritime UK, took part in a round-table debate with government ministers to discuss both the challenges and opportunities facing the UK's maritime industry, and how the government can strengthen the country's appeal as an attractive business centre.

Low-Carbon Shipping Alliance Gains Momentum

Days after the announcement by International Maritime Organization (IMO) of the Global Industry Alliance (GIA), another commercial company has joined the initiative to help shipping and related industries transition towards a low-carbon future. Finnlines, Alfa Laval Ink Scrubber Performance Deal

Finnish shipping operator Finnlines, part of the Grimaldi Group, has placed a service order with Alfa Laval to optimize the performance of its existing Alfa Laval PureSOx scrubber systems. The performance agreement was tailored for Finnlines using the Alfa Laval 360° Service Portfolio, a structured selection of defined service offerings. The Alfa Laval performance agreement with Finnlines covers PureSOx systems installed on board seven RoRo vessels: Finnpulp, Finnmill, Finnhawk, Finnkraft, Finncarrier, Finnmaster and Finnmerchant.

The Grimaldi Group has placed orders for seven hybrid Alfa Laval PureSOx systems with U-design scrubbers. The orders are an important milestone, as the second of these systems is also the 100th U-design scrubber to be sold by Alfa Laval. The Grimaldi Group, which is the parent company of Atlantic Container Line, Finnlines and others, is a multinational logistics group based on maritime transport. Specialized in the operation of RoRo vessels, car carriers and ferries, the group has been using Alfa Laval PureSOx systems to meetSOx emission limits since 2014.

Italian Ship Owners Accused of Poor Shipbreaking Practices

Italian shipping companies Grimaldi Group, Ignazio Messina and Vittorio Bogazzi & Figli are facing strong criticism from the NGO Shipbreaking Platform for reported poor shipbreaking practices. The NGO Shipbreaking Platform, a global coalition of 19 environmental, human rights and labor rights organizations working to end polluting and dangerous shipbreaking, denounced the companies, calling upon them to take action to ensure the sustainable recycling of their end-of-life fleet.

Wärtsilä Scrubbers for Finnlines Vessels

Finnlines, a Ro-Ro and passenger vessel operator with services in the North and Baltic Seas, has contracted Wärtsilä to supply three vessels with exhaust cleaning scrubber systems. The deal marks a repeat order for Wärtsilä, following a similar contract from Finnlines in 2014 to have six of its ships fitted with exhaust gas cleaning systems. Part of the Grimaldi Group, Finnlines' passenger-freight vessels offer services from Germany to Finland and Sweden, as well as from Sweden via the Åland Islands to Finland.
