Wärtsilä Partners to Develop Hybrid Dredger
Wärtsilä has signed a strategic development agreement with Chinese state-owned shipbuilder CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Shipbuilding Company Limited Huangpu Wenchong. The five year agreement is aimed at the joint development of a hybrid powered dredger, but could possibly extend to other hybrid vessels as well. The agreement was signed on December 3 at the Marintec conference and exhibition in Shanghai.The purpose of the agreement is to build a cooperation framework and working mechanism for the research and development of hybrid power systems.

CWind Orders Hybrid Crew Transfer Vessel
Isle of Wight shipbuilder Wight Shipyard Co (WSC) has been contracted by CWind to build the world’s first hybrid surface effect crew transfer vessel, to service the Borssele 1 and 2 offshore windfarms located 23 kilometers off the Dutch coast.CWind’s long-term charter contract agreement with Ørsted, which operates the Borssele 1 and 2 offshore windfarms, will start in mid-2020. The agreement will cover an initial three-year firm charter with options available for a further two years.WSC said it will manage the build project from its development stage right through to delivery.

Ferry in Estonia Upgraded to Battery-Hybrid
Norwegian Electric Systems has signed a contract with the Estonian shipbuilder Baltic Workboats to deliver upgrade of the Diesel Electric Propulsion system onboard the ferry Tõll to battery-hybrid.The ferry operator TS Laevad, a subsidiary of the listed port Company Tallinna Sadam, operates the ferry routes between Western Estonia’s major islands and mainland. The upgraded hybrid-ferry, serving the Virtsu-Kuivastu route, is expected to reduce the consumption of diesel fuel by one fifth as a result of the hybridization project.

Wärtsilä Achieves New Benchmark with Hybrid Solution for Bulk Carriers
Wärtsilä reports it has achieved a new tech benchmark with the introduction of a hybrid installation for a bulk carrier, reportedly a maritime first.The system will be installed on the M/V Paolo Topic, a bulk carrier built at Onomichi Dockyard in Japan and managed by Marfin Management S.A.M. Wärtsilä’s hybrid power module, the Wärtsilä HY, is designed to deliver seamless integration and control of the technologies to be installed, with the ship’s various existing power production systems. The integrated solution is expected to deliver a reduction in fuel consumption and maintenance costs.

Rolls-Royce Equips Hybrid/LNG Live Fish Carrier
Nordlaks in Stokmarknes, Norway, is currently building a 385m long and 60m wide offshore salmon farm. The installation is being built at the CIMC Raffles yard in China. Nordlaks has also ordered a new hybrid/LNG live fish carrier (wellboat) to be built at the Tersan shipyard in Turkey. Rolls-Royce has been commissioned to provide equipment for both newbuilds, which have been designed by NSK Ship Design.Rolls-Royce will supply six TT1100 tunnel thrusters to the massive fish farm, which has been designed to produce salmon further offshore than has been possible so far.

Hybrid Energy Storage Solution Installed on Viking Princess
Wärtsilä said it completed the installation of a hybrid energy system on board offshore supply vessel (OSV) Viking Princess. The Norwegian vessel is now the first ever OSV in which batteries reduce the number of generators aboard the ship. The new energy storage solution will improve engine efficiency, generate fuel savings and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Viking Princess completed sea trials and the system was handed over to customer Eidesvik Offshore on October 9, 2017.
