Kongsberg Digital has received DNV-GL statements of compliance for two of its newest Engine Room Simulator models designed to provide in-depth training on the K-Sim Engine simulator platform. Fjord Wins Nor-Shipping Environmental Award
Rolls-Royce congratulated the Norwegian Ship Owner and Ferry operator Fjord Line on the environmental efficiency award presented to the two passenger ferries Stavangerfjord and Bergensfjord during the Nor-Shipping exhibition in Oslo. The two ferries will be the first international service passenger ferries in the world to run on pure LNG engines. Both vessels are equipped with LNG based power and propulsion systems delivered by Rolls-Royce. This includes four Bergen gas engines for each vessel, powering a highly efficient Promas integrated rudder and propeller propulsion system.
Tanker Converted to LNG-electric Propulsion
Bergen Tankers’ 95-meter-long chemical and product tanker Bergen Viking has returned to service following its conversion from diesel-electric to liquefied natural gas (LNG)-electric propulsion. Delivered in 2007, the Rolls-Royce powered vessel supplies diesel and petrol along the Norwegian coastline in trade for Statoil as part of a fleet of six vessels owned by Bergen Tankers AS. Bergen Viking’s retrofit saw four of the ship’s original six diesel generating sets replaced with two Rolls-Royce Bergen C6 generating sets.
St. Lawrence Seaway LNG Dual-fuel Ferries Ordered
Chantier Davie Canada contracted to build two dual-fuel Ro-Pax ferries for La Société des traversiers du Québec. The two dual-fuel LNG Ro-Pax ferries will operate on the St. Lawrence River on the Tadoussac-Baie-Sainte-Catherine route and are due to enter service in 2015. At 92 m long, each vessel will have over 625 lane meters across two decks, allowing the transport of over 115 vehicles and 10 heavy goods vehicles. Alan Bowen, CEO of Davie commented “This project has been a long time in the planning and we are very excited to now begin construction. The dual-fuel LNG engines are a perfect fit with Davie’s specialization in advanced propulsion and vessel maneu- vering systems.
Caterpillar Extends Focus on LNG Engines
Caterpillar, Inc. is continuing its focus on LNG engine technology as part of its ongoing commitment to develop environmentally clean, fuel-efficient engines for the marine industry. This initiative will ensure the company’s marine-focused engines are in compliance with existing IMO II (and pending IMO III) emissions requirements and low-sulfur fuel regulations in emission-controlled areas. Following the company’s 2011 introduction of the MaK M 46 DF, a dual-fuel engine platform for the commercial marine industry that will be available in 1st quarter 2014, Caterpillar is simultaneously developing a LNG-fueled, high-speed engine below 2 MW that will be designed primarily for electric propulsion with specific focus on offshore and ferry applications.
Wärtsilä Wins 16 LNG Engine Orders
In the first two months of 2006, Wärtsilä Corporation won orders for a further 16 Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines to power four LNG (liquefied natural gas) carriers contracted in Korea. In January Wärtsilä was awarded an order to supply two sets of four Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines to Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering (DSME) of Korea. These engines will be installed in two dual-fuel-electric LNG carriers contracted by Bergesen Worldwide Gas of Norway, and are the first Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines to be ordered by DSME. In February Hyundai Heavy Industries and Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries of Korea ordered two sets of four Wärtsilä 50DF dual-fuel engines to power two dual-fuel-electric LNG carriers for Mitsui OSK Lines (MOL) of Japan.
First Containership Retrofitted to Run on LNG
The world’s first containership retrofitted with a liquefied natural gas (LNG) engine was launched on August 23, 2017. Since May 2017, the 1,000 TEU containership Wes Amelie, owned by Wessels Reederei based in Harem/Ems, has undergone an engine conversion at the German Dry Docks in Bremerhaven, and from this point forward will run on LNG fuel. Experts from the Hamburg based company Nauticor were selected to conduct the vessel’s initial LNG bunkering at the Kühlhauskai in the Port of Bremerhaven. In total, four trucks of LNG were brought to the German port and transferred to the vessel.

In the immortal words of one Kermit the Frog, “it’s not easy being green.” Nor inexpensive. Offshore ship owners managing the demand “fallout” of the past year and navigating myriad environmental strictures say their leap of faith toward greener fuels has taken its toll. The idealism of a decade ago has eroded, they say, in the face of lost offshore business, especially long-term contracts. Oil company clients that once insisted on high-spec, “green” vessels haven’t renewed contracts for those ships.
Elengy LNG Trans-Shipment at Montoir-de-Bretagne
Elengy, a unit of the French energy company and LNG player Engie, said that the LNG receiving terminal in Montoir-de-Bretagne, managed by the company, has just performed a new generation LNG transshipment. Veka-Group Develops LNG Tankers
Veka-Group has developed three new LNG tankers, which can also be used as bunker ships. Two tankers are destined for short sea trips and/or coastal services. TOTE Inks LNG Supply Deal
Partnership represents the start of LNG adoption as a marine fuel in the United States. Pivotal LNG, Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of AGL Resources Inc., and WesPac Midstream LLC have signed a long-term agreement with TOTE, Inc. to provide liquefied natural gas (LNG) to fuel the company’s two new state-of-the-art containerships. Pivotal LNG and WesPac are constructing a new natural gas liquefaction facility in Jacksonville, Fla., addressing the growing demand for LNG in the southeast.
L-3 MSI to Supply Electrical Packages to Biogas Ferry
L-3 Marine Systems International (L-3 MSI) announced today that it has been awarded a contract to provide advanced automation, navigation, communications and electrical propulsion facilities for Samsø Færgen, a new 100-meter, double-ended passenger/car ferry built by Remontowa Shipbuilding at its Gdansk shipyard on behalf of Danish proprietor, Samsø Municipality. Initially LNG-fuelled, Samsø Færgen is reportedly expected to become the world’s first ferry to operate on locally supplied biogas.
Davie Building LNG-powered Ferries
Canadian shipbuilder Davie held a keel laying ceremony for MV Armand-Imbeau II, marking the beginning of the hull assembly for this first of two sisterships under construction at Davie for the Société des traversiers du Québec (STQ). The two ferries for the Tadoussac‒Baie-Sainte-Catherine route are to built at a total cost of $125 million for year-round navigation on the Saguenay Fjord. The first ferry, MV Armand-Imbeau II, is scheduled to be delivered in Fall 2015, followed by the second, MV Jos-Deschênes II, four months later.
Nordics First Bunkering Station for LNG
Skangas announced that the first ever bunkering station for liquefied natural gas (LNG) in the Nordics is open and operating successfully. The new bunkering station fuels Fjord Line’s cruise ferries, which are the first - and largest - in the world to use "single fueled LNG engines," meaning that they are powered exclusively by LNG. Loading arm is a well-known method of transferring cargo for large oil and LNG terminals. According to Skangas, this is the first loading arm ever developed purely for bunkering. LNG ships have normally been bunkered via hose connections from a truck or a tank.

Five Cat Engines to Power World’s First LNG-Hybrid Barge
Caterpillar Marine announced the first shipment of Cat 3500 series marine gas engines from its Lafayette, Indiana manufacturing facility. Five Cat G3516 marine engines were selected to power the Becker Marine Systems subsidiary, Hybrid Port Energy, LNG-Hybrid Barge, the world’s first LNG-powered barge in the Port of Hamburg. The LNG-Hybrid barge will provide clean and efficient shore power to cold ironing cruise ships and serve as a backup power provider for the local Hamburg electric power and heat grid. The G3516 is a spark-ignited, gas engine specially designed to operate in commercial vessel applications. The solution is compliant with the strict Marine Classification Societies requirements, SOLAS and is certified by Bureau Veritas.
Horizon Lines Plan Diesel/LNG Engine Fuel Conversions
Horizon Lines plans to convert the power plants on two of its steam turbine cargo vessels to modern diesel engines capable of burning conventional liquid fuels or liquefied natural gas (LNG). "We are viewing this as the first step in a repowering initiative for Horizon Lines vessels serving in the Hawaii and Puerto Rico trade lanes," said Sam Woodward, President and Chief Executive Officer. New Shuttle Tanker Design for Teekay
