Austal USA Launches Large USV Vanguard for US Navy

The U.S. Navy’s newest Overlord Unmanned Surface Vessel Vanguard (OUSV3), was recently launched from Austal USA’s shipyard in Mobile, Ala. Vanguard is the first USV for the Navy purpose-built for autonomous operations from the keel-up.Vanguard is being jointly developed by a team led by Austal USA and L3Harris. Once outfitting and testing is completed, Vanguard will autonomously transit to San Diego, joining sister ships, OUSV2 Ranger and OUSV4 Mariner, as part of the Navy’s USV Division 1.

British Seafarer Gets Prison Sentence After Deadly Baltic Sea Ship Collision

A British crew member of the ship Scot Carrier has been found guilty in manslaughter and sentenced to 1.5 years in prison after a ship collision in December last year in the Baltic Sea that killed two Danish seafarers, Danish police said on Thursday.The 30-year old British man was on duty when the 55-meter (180 ft) barge Karin Hoj was in collision with the 90-meter (295 ft) Scot Carrier in fog and darkness off the Danish island of Bornholm.

My first visit in 2007 to the American Society of Naval Engineers’ (ASNE) Multi-Agency Craft Conference (MACC) was an eye-opener. Having built a naval architecture career with frigates, destroyers and other large naval and commercial ships, I was eager to learn of the smaller craft used by the U.S. Navy and other government and military bodies. As my flight into Norfolk, Va. descended over Chesapeake Bay, I gazed in amazement as a Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) raced toward Virginia Beach, slowed, glided up the beach and into its shore base.

British Man Charged in Deadly Baltic Sea Ship Collision

A British crew member of the ship Scot Carrier has been charged with manslaughter in a ship collision in December last year in the Baltic Sea that killed two Danish seafarers, Danish police said on Tuesday.The 30-year old British man was on duty when the 55-meter (180 ft) barge Karin Hoj was in collision with the 90-metre (295 ft) Scot Carrier in fog and darkness off the Danish island of Bornholm. Two crew members on board Karin Hoj died as a result of the collision.The suspect was charged with manslaughter, maritime drunkenness and negligence in maritime traffic, Danish police said.

A Danish ship involved in a collision off the Swedish coast that left one crew member dead and another missing has started to take on water and may soon sink, the Swedish Coast Guard said on Wednesday.At least one person, a Danish crew member from the 55-metre barge Karin Hoj, died in the collision with the 90-metre Scot Carrier, which occurred in fog and darkness off the Danish island of Bornholm in the early hours of Monday.Karin Hoj capsized from the collision but remained afloat, and was towed to shallow water where it was searched.

Two crew members on a British cargo vessel were found to be over the legal limit for drugs or alcohol after a collision with a Danish barge in the Baltic Sea that killed at least one person on Monday, the owner of the British ship said.The 55-metre Karin Hoj barge capsized when it crashed with the 90-metre Scot Carrier off the island of Bornholm in fog and darkness early on Monday.One of the two Danish crew members from the capsized barge was found dead in the hull.

Two Held by Police After Ship Collision off Sweden

Two Danish crew members of a capsized barge were missing in the freezing Baltic Sea on Monday after an overnight collision with a British vessel in a busy maritime route off Sweden.With the pair unlikely to survive long in water temperatures around 4 Celsius, rescue boats and a helicopter hunted for hours. There was also hope they might still be inside an air pocket within the hull of the overturned Karin Hoj.The 55-meter Danish barge and 90-meter Scot Carrier were sailing in the same direction off the island of Bornholm when they crashed in fog and darkness at 3.30 a.m.

Steel Cut for UK's New Warship HMS Belfast

Royal Bodewes Launches Latest Newbuild for Scotline

Dutch shipbuilder Royal Bodewes on Friday launched and christened the latest newbuild in a series for U.K.-based shipping company Scotline.The 90-meter, 4,800 DWAT Scot Isles is Scotline's fourth vessel from Royal Bodewes in recent years, and a sister to the box-shaped singledeckers Scot Carrier, Scot Explorer and Scot Ranger, with Ice Class 1A and enclosed bridge.The British-flagged vessels are classed by Lloyd's Register and are ice class 1FB FS (Finnish and Swedish), mainly used for transporting timber from the Baltics.

Miguel Keith Delivered to U.S. Navy

The Navy accepted delivery of USNS Miguel Keith (T-ESB-5), the expeditionary sea base that was damaged while under construction when its dry dock flooded in July 2018 and subsequently set back by about six months.Delivery marks the official transfer of the ship from the shipbuilder to the Navy. The Expeditionary Sea Base (ESB) 5 will be owned and operated by Military Sealift Command."The Navy and industry team overcame significant setbacks in the construction of this ship, and I'm extremely proud of the urgency and determination displayed on everyone's part to deliver a high-quality ship that will support our operational requirements in the 7th Fleet area of operations," said Capt. Scotline Orders Third Newbuild

U.K based shipping company Scotline Marine Holdings announced that it has  ordered a third newbuild vessel from Dutch shipyard Royal Bodewes which is due for delivery by the end of 2020."The new vessel will adopt the name ‘Scot Ranger’ which has not been used since we sold the previous vessel last year," it said.This vessel will be a sister to the Scot Carrier (launched November 2018) and the Scot Explorer (due for launch November 2019).Although the same design of vessel, the new Scot Ranger will be ice class 1A. This makes her ideal for our liner services out of the Baltic, the company said.The build of the Scot Explorer is progressing well at Royal Bodewes yard in Hoogezand."She is our second newbuild with Bodewes.

Scot Govt Takes Over Two Freight Ferries

The two freight ferries serving the Northern Isles have been bought by the Scottish government. Vessels MV Helliar and MV Hildasay will join the Caledonian Maritime Assets Ltd (CMAL) fleet, having previously been chartered from Fortress.The sister vessels operate on the lifeline routes from Aberdeen to Kirkwall, Orkney and Lerwick, said a press note from CMAL, which owns 26 piers and harbours around Scotland.Minister for Energy, Connectivity and the Islands, Paul Wheelhouse, said: “Our ferry services are iconic transport links that play a vital role for our island economies, so it’s important that we secure the two freight ferries for the future.“Purchasing the vessels outright will also bring financial benefits by delivering savings to the public purse over the longer term.
