Qatar Shipyard, Nakilat, JV's Get US$160-million Funding
Al Khalij Commercial Bank (al khaliji) QSC has provided financing for the two Nakilat shipyard joint ventures: Nakilat-Keppel Offshore & Marine (N-KOM) and Nakilat Damen Shipyards Qatar (NDSQ) for US $120m and US $40m respectively. Nakilat is a Qatari marine transport company providing the essential transportation link in the State of Qatar’s LNG supply chain. The company says its LNG shipping fleet is the largest in the world, comprising 56 LNG vessels.
Car Carrier on Sea Trials Collides with Tankship, Fire Ensues
The 55,000 gt car carrier 'Gravity Highway', which was under construction in Hyundai Mipo Shipyard, collided with chemical tanker 'Maritime Maisie' while on sea trials some 9 nautical miles off Busan, reports Yonhap News Agency. The impact caused a fire on the tanker, which was in danger of sinking, and some of the 27 crew members sustained light burns or abrasions, but none serious, officials informed Yonhap.
Laker Assisted to Repair Yard After Tow, Ice-breaking
The Great Lakes Towing Company and McKeil Marine recently performed a joint assist on the 'CSL Assinboine', a 739-foot laker in Canadian Steamship Company’s fleet. The Great Lakes Towing Company tug North Carolina departed Duluth and met McKeil Marine’s tug Leonard M with the CSL Assiniboine in tow. The North Carolina assisted the laker on the stern while the Leonard M towed the vessel on the bow.
Damaged Bulker Faces St Lawrence Seaway Closure Deadline
The loaded grain carrying bulk ship 'Orsula', a 656-foot Marshall Islands-flagged vessel, has been refloated after running aground near Tibbetts Point in the St. Lawrence Seaway, on Boxing Day, but the US Coast Guard report significant damage to her propellor. The 'Orsula' sailed from Duluth, Minn., with 20,000 tons of wheat, and was planning to exit the St. Lawrence Seaway before it closes for the winter on Monday, 30, December 2013.
North Sea Ferry Blaze: 7 Airlifted to Hospital
Six crew members and a passenger have been airlifted to hospital after a fire on board the DFDS ferry 'MS King Seaways', while en route from North Shields to Amsterdam, approximately 30 miles off Flamborough Head on the north east coast of England. The UK Maritime & Coastguard Agency inform that the Humber Coastguard was contacted by the MS King Seaways, which had 946 passengers and 127 crew on board.
