Dellner to Launch Heavy Duty SKD Disc Brakes

Dellner Brakes AB said it will introduce two new heavy-duty disc brakes to its SKD range that, through a new modular design, are set to deliver more choice and stopping power for large industrial, marine and offshore applications. The new brakes will be launched at Nor-shipping in Oslo, taking place from May 30 to June 2. Designed for stopping rotary motion and statically holding load in large marine vessels and industrial machinery, Dellner’s new SKD 140 brake delivers braking force of up to 258 kN through two brake housings, each containing a powerful hydraulic piston.

Innovative Subsea Crane Ordered for RSV Conversion

Brazilian ship owning company CBO’s vessel CBO Manoella is currently being retrofitted from an offshore platform supply vessel (PSV) into a ROV Support Vessel (RSV). As part of the conversion project, CBO has assigned Rolls-Royce to equip the vessel with a new patented hybrid dual draglink (DDC) subsea crane, marking the first installation of a subsea crane designed to be able to use either fiber or steel wire rope. Keppel on Track to Deliver Rig for Caspian Drilling

Keppel Offshore & Marine Ltd (Keppel O&M) through its subsidiary in Azerbaijan, Caspian Shipyard Company (CSC), is on track to deliver a semisubmersible drilling rig to Caspian Drilling Company Ltd, a subsidiary of the State Oil Company of Azerbaijan Republic (SOCAR). The rig was named Heydar Aliyev at a ceremony in Azerbaijan today by the President of Azerbaijan, Ilham Aliyev. Built to Keppel FELS' proprietary DSSTM 38M design, the rig has been customized for the Caspian Sea's harsh environment condition. It is the first modern semisubmersible to be almost completely built in Azerbaijan.

Videotel Debuts Mobile Platform for eLearning

Videotel, a KVH company, launched a new eLearning content delivery platform that is designed to allow users to view its range of maritime training programs on a wide variety of devices, including tablets and mobile phones. According to the company, this paves the way for seafarers to acquire and test knowledge on any device wherever they are on land and sea. The mobile platform harnesses HTML5 responsive-design capabilities, where content can rescale dynamically to any screen size or aspect ratio. DNV GL Adds Asymmetric Stern To ECO Lines

A vessel with an asymmetric stern has a twisted aft shape that is designed to account for the differing flow conditions on each side of the propeller. The idea emerged in the 1960s, but due to the difficulty of manually developing the optimal shape, this design failed to make a large impact at the time. DNV GL has revisited the idea and, using high-fidelity computer fluid dynamics (CFD) in combination with parametric formal optimization, the classification society can now offer ship owners the option of incorporating an asymmetric stern into their new vessels.

MOL Rolls Out Refined PBCF

Mitsui O.S.K. Lines has announced that its group company MOL Techno-Trade will start selling an upgraded version of its energy-saving Propeller Boss Cap Fins (PBCF). The Worldwide Ferry Safety Association (WFSA) has announced the winners of its 2017 competition for the design of a safe and affordable ferry, chosen by a panel of judges. The awards will be presented on May 11, at WFSA’s Ferry Safety & Technology Conference. DNV GL Initiative to Improve Offshore Site Assessments

DNV GL invites industry partners to start a Joint Industry Project (JIP) for improving the collection and assessment of site conditions data for offshore wind farms. Aiming to increase the efficiency of collecting site conditions, the new JIP will work with stakeholders from across the wind industry. The knowledge generated from the JIP is planned to be ultimately incorporated in a DNV GL recommended practice. The design of an offshore wind farm is dependent on the quality of the calculated site conditions used to derive the design parameters.

Late & Overweight: Germany's New Frigates Found Wanting

Southeast Asia’s largest concrete floating dry dock has been launched by Singapore’s marine engineering company, GL Engineering & Construction Pte Ltd (GL E&C). Built in Batam, Indonesia with a local sub-contractor, the dry dock named ‘Peleke Nui’ has been specially commissioned by an American company, Marisco Limited. San Francisco’s New Ferry Enters Service

Hydrus, the first in a series of new 400-passenger catamaran ferries for the Water and Emergency Transportation Authority (WETA) in San Francisco, has entered service. Designed by Incat Crowther and built by Vigor in Seattle, Hydrus is the first of this new class of vessel with additional ferries to follow. “In the spring of 2015, Vigor began construction on the first of two WETA ferries in this class,” said Tim Kolb, General Manager of Vigor Ballard. “It’s an efficient design and very environmentally friendly”.

New Asset Integrity Management System Launched

Bureau Veritas has launched Veristar AIM 3D asset integrity management system, based on technology partner Dassault Systems’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform. The new solution combines a digital twin of any marine or offshore assets with smart data in a collaborative environment. Veristar AIM 3D will be used in the design, development and implementation of the operational lifecycle, to reflect and predict the condition of any asset, or fleet of assets. The solution supports risk based inspection and condition based maintenance approaches.

ISF Watchkeeper Upgraded

The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and IT Energy have announced the launch of the latest release of their acclaimed ISF Watchkeeper software – ISF Watchkeeper 3.5 – developed for maintaining records of individual seafarers’ work hour records, as required by IMO and ILO regulations, and to help prevent crew fatigue and to avoid issues with Port State Control. On the way to Tier IV compliance, it turns out that experience counts. In late February, the nation’s first Tier IV, Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) tugboat was christened. That’s probably not earthshaking news all by itself – after all, SCR isn’t all that new – but the event likely ushers in a new era of powerful domestic workboats that also come with a greener environmental footprint. FORAN Implemented for Fishing Vessel Inspections

The SENER (Shanghai) Systems Co. office has signed an agreement with the Register of Fishing Vessels of Hebei Province (RFVHB), in China, to authorize the use of its FORAN system. As a result, the RFVHB will now use FORAN to perform fishing vessel inspections. The RFVHB is a public body belonging to the Register of Fishing Vessels of the People’s Republic of China. The use of FORAN will help the RFVHB to improve the efficiency of vessel inspections, while at the same time encouraging the use of this system for fishing vessel design…

Safe Bulkers Expands Fleet

Safe Bulkers, in its Q1 financial results annoucements said that with the latest addition of Pedhoulas Rose, its fleet has increased to 38 dry bulk vessels. In January 2017, the company took delivery of Pedhoulas Rose (Hull No. 1146), a 82,000 dwt, newbuild Kamsarmax class vessel. US Navy to Delay Planned Frigate Award

The U.S. Navy has decided to delay by a year until fiscal 2020 the awarding of a design and construction contract for a planned new frigate, according to congressional testimony on Wednesday by two Navy rear admirals. The delay resulted from a decision to set up a frigate evaluation team to look at how to make the vessel more lethal and survivable, Rear Admirals Ron Boxall and John Neagley said in their prepared testimony. Navy analyses have determined that the U.S. fleet needs 53 small surface combat ships to supplement the larger aircraft carriers and destroyers…

EMP Inks Deal to Supply Aquarius MAS

Eco Marine Power (EMP) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with a Singapore based shipping company to supply its Aquarius Management and Automation (MAS) + Solar solution. The solution will also include hardware and software that will allow ships to monitor fuel oil consumption in real time, automatically calculate NOx/SOx/CO2 emissions and interface with marine solar power systems. Initially one ship in the fleet will be installed with the Aquarius MAS + Solar solution and its performance jointly evaluated.
