Fincantieri Lays Keel for Italy’s New Amphibious Unit
A keel laying ceremony of the multipurpose amphibious unit (LHD or Landing Helicopter Dock) was held Tuesday at Fincantieri’s shipyard in Castellammare di Stabia, Italy, marking the beginning of the slipway works of the unit. The new unit will be delivered in 2022 and it falls within the naval program of the maritime capability of Defense, approved by the Italian Government and Parliament and started in May 2015.

835 Ships Sold to Scrap Yards in 2017
More than 800 large oceangoing commercial vessels were sold to the scrap yards in 2017, according to the latest data from the NGO Shipbreaking Platform. Of the 835 ships sold to scrap yards, 543 vessels – or 80.3 percent of total tonnage dismantled globally – were broken down on the beaches of Bangladesh, India and Pakistan. However, the number of vessels and total GT scrapped in the tree nations decreased compared to 2016.

HII Wins $1.43B Shipbuilding Contract
