American manufacturer Jet Edge informs that its EDGE X-5 5-axis waterjet system with AquaVision Di Controller cuts precise taper-free parts from virtually any material. The EDGE X-5’s sturdy design separates the motion system from the catcher tank, eliminating vibration and ensuring maximum part quality. The system utilizes an industrial PC controller. It is ball-screw driven for optimal precision and features direct-couple AC brushless digital servo motors and single or double carriages.

Rolls-Royce Mulls Sale of Commercial Marine Unit

Industrial conglomerate Rolls-Royce is considering selling the bulk of its struggling marine business as the company embarks on another restructuring which aims to further slash costs. "We are embarking on a further simplification of the business, including the evaluation of strategic options for our Commercial Marine operation and a reduction from five operating businesses to three core units based around Civil Aerospace, Defence and Power Systems," said a press release from the company.

Jet Edge, Inc. has announced  that the United States Patent and Trademark Office has issued the waterjet manufacturer a patent for a high pressure fluid sealing mechanism designed by Jet Edge R&D Engineer Michael Wheeler. Jet Edge’s proprietary high pressure fluid sealing mechanism (U.S. Patent 8,333,387) improves waterjet seal life by providing robust Metal-on-Metal sealing without the use of conventional plastic seals. This technology uses two convex curved surfaces in single line contact with one another to seal ultra-high pressure (UHP) fluid at static pressures up to 130,000 psi.

Chinese Sub near Disputed Islands Stokes Tension with Japan

Japan’s defense minister criticized China on Monday for sailing an advanced stealthy nuclear submarine close to disputed islands claimed by Japan and China, saying the action had stoked tension. Jet Edge’s anniversary event included a special ribbon cutting ceremony courtesy of the I-94 West Chamber of Commerce, a barbecue lunch, factory tours, and live 5-axis waterjet cutting demonstrations. Jet Edge President Jude Lague and TC/American Monorail President Paul Lague were honored by St. Michael Mayor Jerry Zachman. Jet Edge Appoints New International Sales Engineer

Hamburg Süd Order 6,500 Carrier 'Fridge Containers

Hamburg Süd, one of the top refrigerated container carriers worldwide, has ordered 6,500 new containers equipped with Carrier Transicold’s PrimeLINE® refrigeration unit featuring the new energy efficiency-boosting EDGE technology option. EDGE, which stands for Enhanced Digital for Greater Efficiency, includes a set of design enhancements that improve on the industry-leading PrimeLINE unit’s track record for energy efficiency. The EDGE option reduces energy consumption for perishable cargoes by 20 percent compared to a standard PrimeLINE unit in normal operation.

MISC Orders Chemical Tankers

According to The Edge Daily, MISC Bhd ordered four new chemical tankers from South Korea's STX Shipbuilding Co, for delivery in 2009. MISC gave no value for the orders. MISC, which is 62%-owned by state energy firm Petronas, said the tankers would have a gross weight of 38,000 deadweight tonnes each. Total WAF loadings for Asia hit record. Shipments of West African oil to China are set to surge to a record in January, boosting overall fixtures heading east to their highest in at least 14 years, a Reuters survey of shipping fixtures and traders showed on Wednesday. China's loadings are expected to jump by more than 20 percent from December to more than 1.5 million barrels per day (bpd) in January, the survey showed. The figure is the highest barrel-per-day total to sail for China since September, and is some 37 percent above the same month last year.

A joint research project carried out by Wärtsilä and City University London has succeeded in identifying the specific design parameters that create the risk of 'singing' propellers. Though rare, 'singing' is nevertheless an annoying problem that occurs as a strong tonal noise originating from the propeller, thus causing a negative effect to onboard comfort levels. The research programme reached its conclusions in December 2015. The problem has long been recognised in the marine industry.

Tug Safety Training Offered at Port of Milford Haven

A powerful virtual-reality ship simulation system, operated by the Port of Milford Haven is running courses to train tug boat operators from across Britain. The Navigation Suite, based at Milford Waterfront, creates highly realistic computer-generated versions of any port in the world, giving trainees the opportunity to take the controls of any vessel, including tugboats, to practice scenarios. Tug skippers from Williams Marine Services and Teignmouth Harbor Commission spent two days undertaking theory based safety training and working on simulated ‘as real’ scenarios within the port.
