It’s Electric: Charging Asia’s First E-ferry
Innovative charging technologies connect Asia’s first e-ferry to electrical power, eliminating emissions and dramatically reducing operating costs. The retrofitted passenger ferry, which operates between the island of Cijian and the port of Kaohsiung in Taiwan and that entered service last year, is fully electrically powered. This follows the introduction of a hybrid ferry earlier in 2017. The charging solution was supplied by Swiss based engineering firm Cavotec, who said the technology ensures safe, fast and efficient connection of the ferry to electrical power at the Kaohsiung berth.
Norsafe Enters the Cruise and Passenger Ferry Market
Lifeboat manufacturer Norsafe has developed a new partially enclosed lifeboat (PELB) for passenger vessels: the SOLAS compliant Minima 88, a compact 8.8m long boat with a width of 4.25m for 150 persons. Norsafe said it has received an order from Chinese shipbuilder Xiamen Shipyard to provide six of its new Minima-88 lifeboats with compatible LHD-200 davits for Finland based operator Viking Line. The ferry newbuild is due to enter service in 2021 on routes across the Baltic Sea between Turku, Finland and Stockholm, Sweden.
New Patrol Boat Delivered to Puerto Rico PD
The Puerto Rico Police Department (PRPD) has taken delivery of a new patrol boat from Louisiana-based boatbuilder Metal Shark. The new 35-foot Defiant welded aluminum pilothouse patrol vessel, built at Metal Shark’s Jeanerette, La. production facility, joins the fleet of 36-foot Metal Shark Fearless-class high performance center console patrol boats delivered to the PRPD a year ago. The PRPD’s new patrol boat features a fully-enclosed, climate-controlled pilothouse for all weather operation, outfitted with Shockwave shock-mitigating seating for a crew of four, the builder said.
Boreal Orders Electric Ferry at Vard
Shipbuilder Vard Holdings Limited said it has been awarded a contract to build a new car- and passenger ferry due for delivery to Norwegian public transport operator Boreal in the third quarter of 2019. The vessel will ply the Norwegian fjords powered by a fully electrical battery solution for continuous electric operations. Vard said the vessel’s hull will be constructed at one of its Romanian yards, Vard Braila, and final delivery will take place from Vard Brevik in Norway.
New Carnival Ship to Enter Service in 2008
Carnival Corporation & plc has assigned the newbuild slot for the previously announced 116,000-ton cruise ship to U.K.-based P&O Cruises. To be built by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri, the vessel is scheduled to enter service in spring 2008. The new 3,100-passenger vessel will become the largest cruise ship specifically built for British cruise service and continues Carnival's ongoing European expansion strategy. An itinerary for this vessel has not been announced.
Coast Guard Cutter Enters Service
Washington Gov. Christine Gregoire is welcomed aboard the Coast Guard Cutter Terrapin by its crew in Bellingham, Wash., after the Terrapin officially entered service. During the ceremony Gov. Carnival Exercises Option For Third 84,000-Ton Cruise Ship
Carnival Cruise Lines has exercised an option with Kvaerner Masa Yards of Helsinki, Finland, for the construction of a new 84,000- ton ship expected to be delivered in 2002. The 2,112-passenger vessel, to be named Carnival Legend, will cost approximately $375 million. It will be a sister ship to the Carnival Spirit and Carnival Pride, both currently under construction at Kvaerner Masa and expected to enter service in early and late 2001, respectively. In addition to the three Spirit-class ships, Carnival Cruise Lines has three new 102,000-ton Destiny class ships scheduled to enter service over the next four years, including the Carnival Victory, expected to enter service Aug. 31, 2000, and the Carnival Conquest and Carnival Glory, slated to debut in 2002 and 2003, respectively.
RCCL Receives Extension On Options for Two Radiance-Class Ships
Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. has deferred its options to purchase a fifth and sixth ship within its new Radiance class with deliveries in 2005 and 2006. Royal Caribbean and Meyer Werft shipyard of Papenburg, Germany, builder of the Radiance-class ships, agreed to extend the options to January 10, 2003. Both options were to have expired on September 20, 2002. The Radiance-class ships are operated by the Royal Caribbean International brand. Radiance of the Seas entered service in March of 2001. The second Radiance-class ship, Brilliance of the Seas, entered service in July 2002. The third and fourth Radiance-class ships are scheduled for delivery in 2003 and 2004, respectively.
Type 45 Supply for International Paint
International Paint was selected as the sole marine coatings supplier for the Royal Navy Type 45 Anti-Air Warfare Destroyer program, a contract worth nearly $4 million. The award by BAE Systems Naval Ships, the Prime Contract Organization, covers the first six ships in a potential series of eight due to enter service by 2014. Production of the first of class ship, “HMS Daring”, began in March 2003 and is scheduled to enter service in 2009. Following sub assembly of the bow sections, masts and funnels at Vosper Thornycroft in Portsmouth, all ships will be assembled and launched at BAE Systems facilities on the Clyde.
Carnival Signs Letter Of Intent With Fincantieri
Miami-based Carnival Corp. said on Wednesday it plans to build a new $500 million, 110,000-ton ship in Italy for its cruise lines unit. A Carnival spokesperson said the company has signed a letter of intent with Italian shipyard Fincantieri Cantieri Navali Italiani S.p.A. for the construction of the new 2,974-passenger vessel. It said it will be a longer and larger version of Carnival's highly successful "Destiny-class" series, and is due to due to enter service in 2004. Company officials added that two other "Destiny-class" ships being built at Fincantieri are being "stretched" by some 60 ft. (18.2 m) to a total of 952 ft. (290 m) - matching the size of the new vessel. The two vessels - Carnival Conquest and Carnival Glory - are set to debut in 2002 and 2003, respectively.
Israel Gets Nuclear Missile-capable Submarine
An official ceremony to hand over to Israel a Dolphin-class submarine, which can carry nuclear weapons, took place in the German city of Kiel, according to Rianovosti. The German-made submarine, named Tanin ("alligator" in Hebrew), is due to enter service in 2013, when all tests are completed. The Tanin is the fourth submarine of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF), and one of the country’s most expensive defense contracts. Its construction costs are estimated at $500 million, with one third being subsidized by the German government. "The Navy and the submarine fleet constitute a deterrent, protective and strategic arm for the IDF and for the State of Israel," Defense Minister Ehud Barak said during the ceremony.

New & Notable:Halmatic Pilot Boats for Spain's Atlantic Coast
Two of VT Halmatic's new Optimized 35 Pilot Boats entered service with the pilots of La Coruna and Algeciras. Based at opposite ends of Spain's Atlantic Coast these 35's join a list of VT Halmatic pilot boats operating on the Iberian Peninsula and Canary Islands. The Optimized 35 features a new resiliently mounted wheelhouse offering increased comfort and visibility for the two man crew and up to four pilots. The isolated wheelhouse helps to reduce levels of noise and vibration from the machinery space. Equipment levels have been significantly improved from that found on the previous model. The boats are powered by twin Perkins Sabre M215C or Caterpillar 3056TA diesel engines to give a 20-knot top speed on a 9.5 ton displacement.
Two Jensen-Designed Tugboats Commissioned
Two Jensen Maritime-designed tugboats, the Elizabeth B and Beverly B, were commissioned into the E.N. Bisso & Son Inc. fleet during last month's WorkBoat show in New Orleans. The tugboats, which measure 96 ft in length and 34 ft in beam, are the fifth and sixth hulls of this class of tugs to enter service with Bisso. These Rolls-Royce US205MK2 Z-drive tugs are powered by twin Caterpillar 3516-C Series II main engines that produce a total of 4,000 BHP - driving Schottel ASD propulsion units - and are fitted with a Markey hawser winch forward and a Markey capstan aft.
EBDG Completes Barge Designs for Harley
Elliott Bay Design Group (EBDG) recently announced that the final barge in its 31,500-barrel class design for Harley Marine Services (HMS) has entered service. Four hulls were constructed to this design, with EBDG working with the shipyards to provide detail engineering. The first barge constructed, the David Fanning, entered service in December of 2008, followed by the Bernie Briere in February 2009 and the Lily Blair in June of 2009. The Nathan Schmidt completed the design series and entered service in July of 2009.
Holland America Bids Farewell to ms Westerdam
Holland America Line will bid a fond farewell to the ms Westerdam on March 10 as the ship leaves its fleet after 643 voyages during a career spanning more than 13 years with the company. "The departure of a ship from our fleet is always a poignant occasion. The Westerdam is a wonderful cruise ship. million guests with many happy memories and it is bitterwseet to bid her farewell," said A. Kirk Lanterman, Holland America Line chairman and CEO. The Westerdam, with 1,347 guests on board, departed from Ft. eight-day Eastern Caribbean cruise visiting Nassau, Bahamas, San Juan, Puerto Rico; Philipsburg, St. Maarten; St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, and HAL's own private island paradise, Half Moon Cay, Bahamas.
Carnival Signs Letter of Intent for New Ship
Carnival Corporation & plc announced that it signed a letter of intent for a new 116,000-ton ship for its P&O Cruises brand. The new vessel, which will have 3,076 lower passenger berths, will be built by Italian shipbuilder Fincantieri at its Monfalcone yard, at an estimated all-in cost of â‚¬535 million. The ship is scheduled for delivery in spring 2010. Externally, the vessel will be similar to P&O Cruises Ventura, which is scheduled to enter service in spring 2008, but the new product features and interior design will be announced at a future date. This latest ship order will bring the total number of vessels in the P&O Cruises fleet to seven, including five existing ships, as well as the new Ventura, which will be Britainâ€™s largest cruise ship when it enters service in April 2008.

Trimaran Ferry Enters Service
“Benchijigua Express”, the 127 metre high speed trimaran built by Austal for Fred Olsen, S.A. has arrived and entered service in the Canary Islands. Following her handover and departure from Fremantle, Australia on 13 April the vehicle-passenger ferry sailed to Tenerife via Cape Town arriving at 23:00 local time on Thursday 28 April, accomplishing the 9,250 mile journey in 15 days at an impressive average speed, including one scheduled stop, of 25 knots. During the delivery voyage, which included passing the notorious Cape of Good Hope, the vessel encountered severe weather conditions with combined sea and swell of up to eight metres. In the words of the seasoned delivery crew it was the “worst they had ever seen or experienced”.
Washington State Christens New Ferry Suquamish
The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) christened Suquamish, its fourth Olympic Class auto/passenger ferry, to serve passengers on the Mukilteo/Clinton route beginning in 2019. The christening ceremony was held at Vigor's Harbor Island Shipyard in Seattle, where the new 144-car ferry has entered the final stages of construction and preparation ahead of sea trials starting in mid-2018. In addition to summer operations on the Mukilteo/Clinton route, the new ferry will also serve as a maintenance relief vessel in the winter, filling in when other vessels are out of service.
Odfjell Enters Long-Term Timecharter
Odfjell announced the long-term timechartering of two 30,000 dwt. stainless steel type tankers to be built in and owned from Japan. These ships will enter service during 2005 and 2006, bringing the number of such deep-sea chemical tankers chartered by the company to a total of five.
Carnival Charters Ships to Aid Relief Efforts
Carnival Cruise Lines has chartered three of its cruise ships to the Military Sealift Command (MSC) on behalf of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for six months as part of Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The three cruise ships are the Ecstasy, Sensation and Holiday. The federal government will pay Miami-based Carnival Corp. $192 million for providing temporary housing to evacuees from hurricane Katrina on three luxury cruise liners. The Ecstasy, normally homeported at Galveston, Texas, operating four- and five-day cruises, and Sensation, normally homeported in New Orleans operating four- and five-day voyages, will be pulled from service effective Monday, Sept. 5. Initial plans are for both vessels to be docked in Galveston.
Spirit Arrives in Portsmouth
The 32m ferry Spirit of Portsmouth arrives in Portsmouth from Poland for fitout at VT Halmatic's Portchester Shipyard. The Camarc designed vessel will enter service in June 2005.
