New Larger Ferry Arrives in NYC
Ridership on the new NYC Ferry system has far exceeded expectations, serving 5 million passengers since the service was launched in May 2017. Now, in response to the record-breaking demand, new larger-capacity ferries are being built for New York waters, the first of which, Ocean Queen Rockstar, has arrived in New York this week.Ocean Queen Rockstar, the first in a series of six new 350-passenger capacity vessels being built for the NYC Ferry fleet, completed sea trials and journeyed 2,200 nautical miles from builder Metal Shark’s Gulf Coast shipyard to New York Harbor earlier this week.

The Duclos family is iconic in boatbuilding circles, as the Somerset, Mass.-based Gladding-Hearn, Duclos Corporation, has built a strong heritage in the pilot boat and fast ferry sectors, and in total more than 425 vessels have been delivered since it was founded in 1955. Today a trio of second-generation siblings run the yard, brothers and co-presidents John and Peter Duclos with sister Carol Hegarty serving as CFO. Second Fast Ferry Delivered in Massachusetts
The second of two new high-speed catamarans from Gladding-Hearn Shipbuilding has been delivered to the Massachusetts Bay Transit Authority (MBTA).Funded by a grant from the Federal Transit Authority (FTA), M/V Glory will pair with her sister-ship to provide year-round commuter service in Boston Harbor, replacing the high-speed ferries built by the Somerset, Mass. shipyard in 1997.Designed by Incat Crowther, the all-aluminum ferry is 88.7 feet LOA, 28.8 feet abeam, and draws approximately four feet loaded.
SMS Completes Hat Trick of European Refits

Eco Vessel Features Silent Drive
Incat Crowther launched of Spirit of the Wild, a spectacular new tour vessel for Gordon River Cruises, and the first in Australia to operate in World Heritage-listed wilderness with Silent Drive. Offering interpretive tours into the heart of the UNESCO Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, Spirit of the Wild will give customers a unique natural experience. Built by Richardson Devine Marine, Spirit of the Wild is fitted with a pair of MTU 10V2000M72 main engines. Added to this is a cutting-edge hybrid electric system, consisting of a pair of ABB e-motors, driving Hybrid-ready ZF gearboxes.
New Ferry Seastreak Commodore Delivered
Seastreak’s newest vessel, Seastreak Commodore, has been developed in response to significant passenger volume growth and brings the operator’s fleet of Incat Crowther-designed vessels to a total of eight.The 45m-long, 600-passenger ferry built at the Gulf Craft shipyard in Louisiana is the highest capacity UCSG k-Class fast ferry ever built. Incat Crowther said it worked closely with Seastreak to develop the vessel’s layout and styling to allow 600 people to safely and comfortably undertake their daily commute.
Sydney’s Newest Ferry Begins Operations
A newbuild 27-meter catamaran passenger ferry has been delivered to the Australian Public Company Sealink, and has commenced operations on Sydney Harbor. Designed by Incat Crowther and built by Aluminium Marine, Nancy Wake is a 280 passenger vessel accommodating 198 passengers inside and 82 outside. Nancy Wake is the fourth vessel of this design, which includes Incat Crowther’s new generation propeller tunnel which reduces draft and offers a flat transom to integrate with standard fixed or active interceptor systems. Fuel consumption is also reduced, the designer said.

If a hull was delivered in 2017, we took a look at it, with several areas as a focus for inclusion into this edition. For starters, it is always exciting when a domestic yard delivers a vessel – or multiple vessels, for that matter – to foreign buyers. We can compete in a foreign arena; on price, quality and on-time delivery. This year was no different.
Dive Support Vessel Delivered to Stapem Offshore
The first of two new 18-meter catamaran dive support vessels built for Paris-based Stapem Offshore has been delivered by South African shipbuilder Legacy Marine Group. The Marshal Island-flagged vessel, Stapem Beluga, will operate in the coastal waters of Angola in support of oil and gas exploration and production. The vessel, designed by Incat Crowther, has been customized to suit Stapem’s specific operational requirements. The aft exterior deck utilizes available space by combining deck lockers and racks for diving equipment storage with a covered dive prepping area.
New Vessels to Help Philippines Fight Illegal Fishing
Two new 50-meter multi-mission offshore vessels (MMOV) will soon help the Philippine Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) fight illegal fishing in Philippine waters. The sister ships – DA BFAR MMOV 5001, named BRP Lapu-Lapu, and DA BFAR MMOV 5002, named BRP Francisco Dagohoy – were built by Manilla-based Josefa Slipways, and have recently completed speed and endurance trials ahead of their upcoming delivery. Metal Shark Introduces New Line of Passenger Vessels
At the same time, Metal Shark also announces reduced lead times for newbuild vessels. Louisiana-based shipbuilder Metal Shark has partnered with design firm Incat Crowther to develop an entirely new line of passenger vessels. At last week’s Passenger Vessel Association (PVA) Maritrends Conference in Savannah, Georgia, Metal Shark introduced its new “Endurance PV-X” passenger vessel lineup, with 26-meter (150-passenger) and 32-meter (350-passenger) models now available and additional offerings to follow.
Wight Shipyard to Build New Danube River Ferry
U.K. shipbuilder Wight Shipyard Co has secured an order to build a new 39-meter low wash, high-speed catamaran ferry for operation by Twin City Liner on the Danube River between Vienna and Bratislava. The new vessel is scheduled to be delivered in time for the 2019 summer season, starting at the end of March. Incat Crowther said it was selected as the designer after its staff viewed the operation on the Danube first-hand, affording a detailed understanding of the complex operational requirements.

Two Incat Crowther Ferries join Ultramar
Incat Crowther has delivered City Jet 1 and City Jet 2. The 28m Passenger ferries are part of a six vessel new build program for the Cancun-based operator, Ultramar. The vessels will operate at high frequency across the enclosed lagoon adjacent to Cancun, thereby sparing tourists a notoriously lengthy bus trip and reducing travel times by up to 70%. The ferries were built by Midship Marine in Harvey, Louisiana. The main deck cabin can accommodate 118 passengers in high-end seating. Sliding doors are fitted at both the forward and aft ends of the cabin for ease of access.
Cummins QSK95 Propulsion for Ferry Newbuild
Azam Marine’s next newbuild, Kilimanjaro VII, will be the first passenger ferry powered by QSK95 propulsion engines from engine manufacturer Cummins. Two QSK95 propulsion engines will provide main propulsion power to the new Incat Crowther designed fast catamaran, which will be built by Australian shipbuilder Richardson Devine Marine in Tasmania. Azam Marine Orders 45m Passenger Ferry
Tanzanian ferry operator Azam Marine has placed an order for a newbuild 45-meter catamaran passenger vessel. This ferry is the 10th vessel designed by Incat Crowther for the operator and will be the seventh vessel built for the operator by Richardson Devine Marine. The 500-passenger, 35 knot vessel features the operator’s trademark parallel boarding system, whereby five ramps per side load passenger and cargo in segregated flows. VIP and Royal Class passengers board directly into a discreet stair tower to the upper deck cabin, while economy passengers load separately aft and midships.
Wight Shipyard Building Fast Ferry Duo for Mexico
Export orders continue for shipbuilder Wight Shipyard Co with a multiple vessel contract from Mexico’s largest ferry operator. The order for two new 37-meter passenger ferries comes from Ultramar, who until now has built all its high speed ferries in the U.S. The newbuils will be the first British vessels to be built for Mexico in living memory. “This order for Ultramar really is very satisfying as it continues our move into international markets,” said Wight Shipyard CEO, Peter Morton.
More MTU Engines Destined for Majestic Ferry in Singapore
Rolls-Royce is to supply more MTU engines to fast ferry operator Majestic Ferry in Singapore. Designed by Incat Crowther, a total of seven new fast ferries are being built at PT Cahaya shipyard in Batam, Indonesia over the next two years. Rolls-Royce is to supply 14 MTU engines for them by 2019. Each of the twin-hulled vessels is to be powered by two MTU 16V 2000 M72 units. “The determining factor for this follow-on order is the positive experience the operator has had with MTU engines and with our service,” said Chew Xiang Yu, a member of marine sales staff at MTU Asia.

Incat Crowther Designs Ferry for Rhode Island
A second catamaran ferry under construction at Gladding Hearn Shipbuilding in Massachusetts for Rhode Island Fast Ferry will expand on the success of the 2012-delivered Ava Pearl, meeting increased passenger demand and adding a new route to RIFF’s operation.The new ferry, scheduled to be delivered in 2019, has been designed by Incat Crowther to carry 320 passengers, more than twice the passenger capacity of Ava Pearl.The vessel utilizes Incat Crowther’s ‘S bow’ hulls which have demonstrated improved passenger comfort in the sea conditions typically encountered in the region.
