Foran Employed in Production Design of Pushboat

FORAN has been used by the naval architecture firm ROBERT ALLAN LTD. in the review of the production design of 6000 HP Shallow Draft Pushboat, to be built in Erin Shipyard in Manaus, Brazil. ROBERT ALLAN Ltd., a Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering Company based in Vancouver, Canada signed a contract with SENER Ingeniería y Sistemas S.A. (SENER) for the use of FORAN FVIEWER during this project. The 6000 HP Shallow Draft Pushboat was designed by ROBERT ALLAN LTD. for Hidrovias do Brasil. GHENOVA INGENIERIA & GHENOVA BRASIL are developing the complete 3D Model and 2D Production Design.

Loutit Awarded Robert Allan Memorial Scholarship

The trustees of the Robert Allan Memorial Scholarship Trust have awarded the scholarship for 2017 to Taryn Loutit. Loutit is a fourth year mechanical engineering student at the University of Victoria with a passion for and an objective to pursue a career in naval architecture and marine engineering. She has an outstanding academic record and has completed five co-op work terms with marine-related businesses. The Robert Allan Memorial Scholarship Trust was initiated in 1982 from a bequest by the late Robert F. Allan, and with support from his many industry friends and colleagues.

Pelindo III to Receive 15 Tugs in Indonesia

In early 2015, Robert Allan Ltd., Naval Architects of Vancouver, Canada was awarded a contract to provide four customized versions of its distinctive RAzer series designs of ASD tugboats to the Indonesia Port Corporation, “PT Pelabuhan Indonesia III (PERSERO)”, commonly known as Pelindo III. While Robert Allan Ltd. had long been very active in the Asian market, these designs were its first directly for a company from Indonesia, a country estimated to employ more than 2,000 tug boats.

Robert Allan Sign Tugboat Design Contracts in Netherlands

Robert Allan Ltd informs of the signing of two contracts during a recent Canadian Trade Mission to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The first signing covered the new ART 80-32, designed by Robert Allan Ltd. and incorporating a hybrid propulsion system developed by Aspin Kemp & Associates (AKA). The vessels are under construction at the Damen Shipyard in Poland and will enter the KOTUG fleet later this year. The second signing covered the recently awarded contract for three offshore Rotor tugs, destined for service at the Shell “Prelude” FLNG facility off the coast of Northern Western Australia.

Brazil Shipyard Delivers Second RAmparts Tugboat

Designers Robert Allan inform that Keppel Singmarine Brasil Ltda. (KSMB), of Navegantes, Brazil have recently completed the construction of the 24m LOA 'SMIT Pareci', the second of a series of six Robert Allan designed RAmparts 2500 tugs, for SMIT Rebocadores do Brasil (Rebras), of Rio de Janeiro. The designers explain that the RAmparts Class tugs are a series of proven, standardized Z-drive tug designs. Each of these designs has been developed from a successful prototype vessel or series of vessels, and refined to emphasize ease of construction and Owners’ specific requirements.

Ningbo Port Orders New Dual-fuel Tug

Robert Allan Ltd. On October 21, Robert Allan Ltd. was awarded a contract by Ningbo Port Company Ltd. in China for a RAstar 4200-DF Class dual-fuel (LNG-MDO) tug. The award of this contract builds on a history of collaboration between the two companies on several series of tug designs, dating back to 2004, and includes multiple series of 32- to 39-meter-long tugs (4,800 to 7,200 horsepower), including the recent Yong Gang Tuo 31. Sanmar Building 150th Robert Allan Designed Tug

Robert Allan Ltd. and Sanmar Denizcilik A.S. have reached a milestone in their ongoing relationship: scheduled to be launched later this year, a RAstar 2800 will mark the 150th tug that Sanmar has built to a Robert Allan Ltd. design. This milestone tug is the first of six custom designed for Svitzer’s new “Silver Bullet” project. On April 26, 2016, Cheoy Lee Shipyards launched the 100th vessel it has built to a Robert Allan Ltd. design, becoming the second shipyard worldwide to do so, after Sanmar’s initial achievement of this milestone in 2013. This epic tug, Hull Number 5098 at Cheoy Lee, is a RAstar 3200 class ASD tug, with completion expected in August, 2016. At present Cheoy Lee’s Hin Lee yard in China is very busy with a flotilla of Robert Allan Ltd. tugs at various stages of completion. The cooperation between Robert Allan Ltd.

On April 26, 2016, China’s Cheoy Lee Shipyards launched its 100th vessel built to a Robert Allan Ltd. design, becoming the second shipyard worldwide to do so, following Sanmar’s achievement in 2013. The cooperation between Robert Allan Ltd. and Cheoy Lee dates back to 2003, with the construction of the first of the Z-Tech series tugs for PSA Marine. The milestone tug, Hull Number 5098 at Cheoy Lee, is a RAstar 3200 class ASD tug, with completion expected in August, 2016. Cheoy Lee’s Hin Lee yard in China is presently busy with a flotilla of Robert Allan Ltd.

Robert Allan Inks Contract with Uzmar Shipyard

Robert Allan Ltd. has announced the signing of a contract during the recent International Workboat Show in New Orleans, USA. Robert Allan Ltd. and Uzmar Shipyard signed documents commencing a new high performance escort tug project. Uzmar has now built over 90 Robert Allan designed tugs and workboats since the first project in 1996, ranging in size from 15m aluminium catamarans, to 36m escort tugs, to 46m shallow draft pushboats. This contract covers a new RAstar 3000-W design setup to accommodate propulsion packages of up to 90 tonnes of bollard pull while still staying under 500 GT.

Oben Naki Heads to Canada

Emphasising the close working relationship which exists between naval architects Robert Allan Ltd and Turkish shipbuilders Sanmar Ltd, Sanmar's Oben Naki has relocated to Vancouver BC to join the Canadian designers as contracts manager (Turkey). Naki joined Sanmar Shipyards in 2007 immediately on qualifying as a naval architect and marine engineer. He has since gone on to obtain an MBA at Yeditepe University in Istanbul, Turkey’s leading educational establishment. Sanmar has currently constructed some 120 tugs of various sizes and power to Robert Allan designs.

Uotinen Joins Robert Allan Ltd.

Sami Uotinen will join naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd. on October 1, responsible for European Business Development initiatives, operating from Turku, Finland.   Uotinen, a graduate naval architect, joins Robert Allan Ltd. from Rolls Royce, where he has worked since 2000, most recently as North American Sales Manager for Z-Drive propulsion. He has also held positions at Aquamaster, Kamewa and Kvaerner Masa Yards.  

Reeve's Joins Robert Allan Ltd

Robert Allan Ltd. announced that Henry Reeve, P.E. (BASc, UBC Mech 95, Masters, NA and Offshore Engineering, Berkley ’97) has joined Robert Allan Ltd. as a Senior Naval Architect. Reeve’s areas of expertise include hydrodynamics and motions, mooring, resistance predictions, stability (ship and offshore), model testing, CFD analysis, regulatory and classification issues, and vessel survey.  He has worked on the naval architecture aspects of CNG and LNG Terminals and Ships, SWATHs, Ro-Ro Ferries, MODU’s, FPSOs and FSOs, SPARs, TLPs and Offshore Current Turbines.  

Robert Allan Ltd. Restructures

Robert Allan Ltd. announced that a long-planned re-structuring of the company has just been completed. Effective July 2008, Robert G. Allan has been appointed as Executive Chairman of the Board and remains at the helm. A core group of senior employees have become shareholders of Robert Allan Ltd., and will become increasingly involved in the company business. Robert Allan Ltd. The new organization will establish the culture of employee ownership and facilitate the succession from generation to generation. Assuming the position of President will be Ken Harford, P. Eng., who has been a key figure in the company for the past twenty years, most recently as Vice-President of Marine Engineering.

Robert Allan Delivers Two RAmparts 3200 CL Tugs to Ocean Sparkle

In 2011, Ocean Pioneer and Ocean Perfect, the first two RAmparts 3200 CL tugs developed by Robert Allan exclusively for Cheoy Lee Shipyards, Hong Kong were delivered to Ocean Sparkle Limited, the largest Indian tug owning and operating company with more than 80 tugboats under its fleet. Since then, 33 sister tugs of this CL series have been constructed by the same builder for their clients around the world. Canadian naval architecture firm Robert Allan Ltd. and Chinese shipbuilder Cheoy Lee Shipyards have rolled out the RAmparts 2500-CL, an exclusive new tug series being built by Cheoy Lee. The new tug series is an evolution of Robert Allan Ltd.'s RAmparts 2500-W design, updated for Cheoy Lee's marketing objectives, which include increased flexibility allowing for a multitude of options according to clients’ requirements. The first RAmparts 2500-CL vessel is scheduled for delivery in early 2018.

Tough Twins: New Fireboats for Port of Long Beach

Canada based naval architect and marine engineering firm Robert Allan Ltd. is a leading designer of high-performance response vessels of many types and in particular, large fireboats for major ports worldwide. In addition to the vessels’ outwardly obvious role of fighting fires, these vessels also serve as incident command centers or as primary response vessels for any local emergency actions requiring water-based control. Robert Allan Ltd. was awarded a contract in the summer of 2011 to prepare plans and specifications for a pair of fireboats for the Port of Long Beach, Calif.

New RAmparts 2400W Tug Chincha Launched

A new ASD tug designed by Robert Allan Ltd. was launched on April 26, 2016 in Jiangsu Province, China for its Peruvian owners. Based on Robert Allan Ltd.’s RAmparts 2400W class, the Chincha was built by Jiangsu Wuxi Shipyard and fully customized to meet her owner’s requirements. Chincha is the first of two RAmparts 2400W tugs to be built for the growing Peruvian maritime and port operations company, Trabajos Marítimos S.A. (Tramarsa). Tramarsa has been in business since 1990 and operated harbor tugs built to Robert Allan Ltd. designs since 2000.
